Spreading Improvements in Teaching to All Classrooms
Abstract: The history of teaching improvement in the United States is filled with pockets of excellence that do not spread to the average classroom. Most students experience mathematics teaching today much like their ancestors a century ago. One path toward wider-scale and lasting improvement in teaching is to focus on teaching rather than on teachers. Dr. Jim Hiebert will describe why this simple-sounding change could have profound effects for teachers, teacher leaders, and administrators. Although this path has not been taken in the U.S., it has been remarkably successful in other countries. Dr. Hiebert will examine the challenges and the benefits of this approach for American education. Check-in: 3:45-4:15 p.m. • Program: 4:15-5:45 p.m. Location: Kremen Education 140 (NW corner of Maple and Shaw Ave.) California State University, Fresno Parking: FREE on weekends after 4:00 p.m. on Friday
