Fresno State was founded as Fresno Normal School in 1911 with a focus on teacher preparation. Located at the geographic center of California, Fresno Normal School quickly expanded its curriculum, joining the California State University system in 1961 and being granted university status in 1972. Its 1,410-acre campus, including the university farm, is located several miles northeast from downtown Fresno. Fresno State, a public comprehensive university, is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and as an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). Fresno State received the 2020 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

The Kremen School of Education and Human Development (Kremen) consistently prepares more P-12 teachers than any other public university in California. In addition, Kremen trains counselors and educational leaders, while providing professional support to the community and promoting applied research. Kremen also collaborates with faculty and staff in colleges across the Fresno State campus to support educator preparation programs in Agriculture, Deaf Education, School Counseling, School Nurse Services, School Psychology, School Social Work and Child Welfare & Attendance, and Speech-Language Pathology.

Kremen’s theme, "Leadership for Diverse Communities," places considerable emphasis on an educator who can function effectively as a leader in a culturally and linguistically diverse society. Our programs offer diverse field experiences, and our students learn strategies to optimize the education of emergent bilinguals while valuing what those students bring to the classroom and society. Overall, Kremen articulates its commitment to equity in our Vision Statement: “Guided by our vision for an inclusive and equitable future, the Kremen School of Education and Human Development uses innovative models to prepare high quality teachers, counselors, and administrators who act as agents of change in our community.”
