Master of Science in Counseling
Curriculum
M.S. in Counseling, option in Student Affairs and College Counseling
The program curriculum consists of a) core counseling classes, b) SACC specialization classes, and c) completion of a culminating experience plus elective classes. The core counseling coursework will equip students with knowledge of counseling theories and approaches. The SACC specialization coursework will introduce students to college student development theories and student affairs as a helping profession. For the culminating experience, students have the option to complete a comprehensive exam, project, or thesis.
The program curriculum is grounded in experiential learning. SACC students are provided with opportunities to develop and enhance their counseling skills in the classroom setting during coursework, counseling lab setting during practicum, and higher education setting during field practice. Students complete a minimum of 100 hours of supervised counseling practicum experiences in the first year of the program. Then, students complete 600 hours of supervised counseling field practice experiences over two semesters in the second year of the program.
