Student 1 Notes
M.S. is a registered nurse who worked in critical care and case management from 1987
to 2016 when she was hired by Bakersfield City School District. She was referred to
Fresno State by her coordinator and contacted Fresno State in 2019 requesting consultation
as to prerequisite coursework for the School Nurse Credential Program, specifically
community health. M.S. completed all prerequisites and formally applied to the program
12/2019. M.S. achieved a SNSC rubric score of 35 with a GPA of 4.00 in her BSN and
had high scoring Letters of Recommendation. M.S. was formally admitted to the program,
and after Orientation in June 2020 she completed N137 with a grade of A. In Fall
of 2020 she experienced crises when her father passed after a few weeks in hospice
and early in December her mother passed. M.S. decided to continue in the program but
requested additional time for assignments in Fall coursework which was granted, and
she achieved a GPA in both classes of 4.00. M.S. requested consultation as to continuing
in the program and/or delaying the practicum for Spring. After discussion it was
decided to continue in the SNSC program and if needed take a course extension. In
January, M.S. lost a cousin to COVID. Despite all of the challenges M.S. was able
to complete the program by working with instructors to allow leeway in assignment
submission and remained in close contact with program coordinators as to her progress.
GPA remained 4.00. Preceptors rated M.S. a 5 (Excellent) in Professional Dispositions
and Professional Management areas. On student performance evaluations it was stated,
M.S. “is a positive and inquisitive person and always trying to ask the right questions
to be of help to others. She is a very good school nurse. She is kind, compassionate
and dedicated.” In May 2021, SNSC program coordinators assisted the Credential Analyst
in recommending a needed M.S. for a Credential Extension. In June 2021 M.S. completed
the program and was recommended by her instructors and preceptors for her clear credential
to the CSUF Credential Analyst

R. J. - First contact was via email in March 2018. Candidate lacked Community Health
and was referred to a program at CSUDominguez Hills that offered the required 5 units.
(CSUDH ended their program at the end of 2020). Candidate had a previous Juris Doctorate
degree, and an AA degree for his RN license. Although he lives in southern California
he wanted to meet in person. An office visit was scheduled and held. In the summer
of 2018 he took Audiology, then Counseling in the Fall of 2018, Special Education
in 2019 and finished his CSUDH Community Health classes in Spring of 2020. He started
the SNSC program in the summer of 2020. It was two years from first contact before
he was able to begin the program. He successfully completed the program in May of
2021.

D. L. - First contact was via email in September of 2018. She has a BSN, Master’s
in Public Health, took the required Audiology Course and possessed a Public Health
Certificate (not required but meets the course requirements in Community Health).
Her situation was challenging. She had retired from the State Retirement System and
was required to wait 180 days before working again. She also required an extension
for her preliminary credential. She was accepted for the 2018 program but chose to
defer her start to the following year and her request was granted. Time was spent
with the Credential Analyst and the Coordinator helping the candidate navigate through
the CCTC system for an extension appeal. Additionally she was in need of a preceptor
so one in her area was contacted by the coordinator and agreed to assist her with
her practicum hours. She successfully completed the program in May of 2020. There
were over 100 email exchanges with the coordinator and Credential Analyst from the
first contact.

Student 4 Notes
M. M. was hired in 2015 by Los Angeles USD and in March of 2016 she contacted the
SNSC program and requested consultation via email as to the SNSC Program application
and Community Health coursework. Originally from the Philippines she achieved a Doctor
of Medicine degree. M.M. submitted transcripts for evaluation and completed recommended
prerequisites. She achieved a low 26 on the admission rubric due to a lower GPA, low
letter of recommendation scores, and M.M. lives outside of the Central Valley. M.
M. was accepted for late Fall 2017 entry when an opening to the program opened up;
and she submitted signed contracts for the semester. However, before the first day
of school, M.M. decided to drop from the program and leave school nursing. After
reevaluating she reapplied in December 2019 and formally entered the SNSC program
in March 2020. She was assisted with an Extension recommendation in 7/2020 to the
CTCC by program staff. M.M. successfully completed Summer, Fall and Spring coursework
with a 4.00 average. Her Preceptor stated she was a “very knowledgeable school nurse
and an excellent learner” She received a 5 (Excellent) rating on Professional Dispositions,
Professional Management Skills and Student performance and was recommended for credentialing
in Fall and Spring benchmarks. M.M. was recommended to the CSUF Credential Analyst
for a clear credential by program coordinators 6/6/21.
