Lori Cantu Gonzalez, Ed.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership within the Kremen
School of Education and Human Development at California State University, Fresno.
A former superintendent, scholar-practitioner, and lifelong educator, Dr. Cantu Gonzalez
prepares current and aspiring educational leaders to lead with purpose, advance equity,
strengthen instructional excellence, and build thriving schools where students and
educators flourish.
Prior to joining Fresno State, Dr. Cantu Gonzalez served more than 30 years in California
public education, with leadership experience spanning bilingual classroom teacher,
reading specialist, assistant principal, principal, director, associate superintendent,
and superintendent. Her career, rooted primarily in the rural school districts of
California's Central Valley across Fresno, Merced, and Kern counties, provides a rich
foundation for connecting leadership theory with authentic practice and preparing
future leaders for the complexities of today's schools.
Her teaching, scholarship, and professional engagement explore instructional leadership,
organizational effectiveness, systems thinking, equity-centered leadership, and leader
wellbeing. She is particularly interested in developing resilient educational leaders
who cultivate healthy organizational cultures while sustaining their own wellbeing
and the wellbeing of those they serve. Through research, teaching, and partnerships
with school systems, Dr. Cantu Gonzalez supports leaders in building learning organizations
that are equitable, inclusive, and responsive to the diverse needs of students, educators,
and communities.
Dr. Cantu Gonzalez has also demonstrated a longstanding commitment to professional
service and educational advocacy. She has held leadership roles in statewide professional
associations and has been recognized by her peers for her contributions to educational
leadership and public education. She continues to advocate for policies that strengthen
California's public education system.
Dr. Cantu Gonzalez earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the
University of Southern California. She also holds bachelor's and master's degrees
from California State University, Fresno, where her journey as an educator began.
Her return to Fresno State as a faculty member reflects her commitment to preparing
the next generation of educational leaders while giving back to the institution that
helped shape her own career.
Outside of her professional work, Dr. Cantu Gonzalez values the relationships that
have shaped both her life and leadership. As a wife, mother of three, daughter, sister,
aunt, and friend, she treasures time spent with family and friends. She enjoys practicing
yoga, hiking, traveling, and embracing opportunities to connect, recharge, and continue
learning.
