Pick Your Subject

Below is a list of each single subject credential offered and the department's individual requirements, as they vary based on the subject you are pursuing. To contact a specific department, view our contact list. In addition, potential candidates MUST BE subject matter competent (SMC) prior to admission AND may only apply to ONE of the academic subject matter areas listed below.

All candidates interested in pursuing a Single Subject teaching credential must complete EHD 50 (or equivalent) and CI 149 BEFORE beginning the credential program.

Note 1:  CI 149 is offered every semester for admitted Fresno State students.  Non-Fresno State students will need to take CI 149  through “Open University” or through the Office of “Continuing and Global Education (CGE) during the regular, winter, and/or summer session (CGE INFORMATION LINK).

Note 2: Due to the academic subject matter area requirements for the state-mandated assessment expectations of the FAST for Single Subject Credential Program Candidates, academic subject matter area credential option "transfers" within academic subject matter areas are NOT allowed.

Note 3:  All Single Subject Teacher Credential Courses must be taken within five years (this includes course substitution and preexemption  validation)  as courses are only valid for five years from the time of credential program completion.  (Course substituion information located under the Advising and Currciuculm Tab of this SS website.)

Note 4: Fresno State's Single Subject Teacher Credential Program is NOT an "online" program even though some courses are offered online.

Note 5:  Potential applicants MUST BE subject matter competent (SMC) in their academic subject matter area and have met the California Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) prior to be being admitted into the Single Subject Teaching Credential Program.

  • Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) and its options are listed on the  CTC Leaflet CL 667 (link) and on the BSR option webpage (link).
  • Subject Matter Competency (SMC) options (link) are evaluated by the respective academic subject matter area coordinator/advisor.
    • SMC options may include: a) an approved subject-matter  degree; b)  California Subject Matter Examinations (CSET’s);  c) the completion of coursework specific to the academic subject matter area domains; and/or d) a combination of coursework and CSET’s.  Contact the respective academic subject matter area coordinator/advisor for SMC details (see Deparment Contact list below).

Note 6: Space permitting, "complete" applications are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
